Benefits of Dental Implants
Besides appearance, dental implants are needed for good health. Missing teeth can often make chewing and talking difficult. Improper chewing can result in stomach problems and nutritional deficiencies. Replacing missing teeth with dental implants can enhance your chewing abilities, your speech, and overall confidence.
How Dental Implants Work
Dental implants are used to replace your teeth roots. They act as roots (and a base) for permanent dental implant crowns that are placed on top of the implant screw.
A dental implant resembles the look of a screw. After creating a a hole just slightly smaller than the size of the dental implant, the dental implant is placed into the jaw bone and held in through a mechanical retention. The dental implant then heals over the next 3-6 months. In this time, your body will break down the bone around your dental implant and replace it with new bone that locks the dental implant into place.
After the healing phase, a dental implant crown is placed over the implant. There are often 2 parts to the dental implant crown: an abutment and a crown. The abutment is the base of the implant crown that provides support and screws into the implant. The crown is placed over the implant to make the dental implant look like a natural tooth.
When done correctly and cared for properly, dental implants can last a patient’s whole life. It is still important to brush your teeth, floss, and use mouthwash with dental implants. It is also important to maintain routine dental checkups to ensure your mouth is still healthy.
